About the Webinar Series:

Air quality standards have become more stringent over the years posing a significant challenge to the regulatory and regulated community. The conservative assumptions in current modeling techniques have aggravated this issue and made compliance with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) a significant challenge. EPA also recently finalized the Guideline on Air Quality Models (Appendix W) which includes new complexities that need to be considered in regulatory dispersion modeling. This webinar will cover the basics of dispersion modeling, the current state of regulatory modeling and tools that can be used to minimize overpredictions in AERMOD.

Part 1: Basics of Dispersion Modeling - Tuesday, February 21, 2017

The first part of the webinar will cover the regulatory aspects of permit modeling along with an overview of the science, inputs, outputs and limitations of EPA’s preferred model for regulatory purposes (i.e., AERMOD).

Part 2: Advanced Dispersion Modeling - Wednesday, February 22, 2017

The second part of the webinar will cover the current modeling landscape including the new requirements from the updated Guideline on Air Quality Models (Appendix W). Case studies will be presented to showcase available tools that can be used to overcome AERMOD’s limitations. Emphasis will be given to methods that have been used and accepted by regulatory agencies.

PRESENTERS:

Ron L. Petersen, Ph.D., CCM, FASHRAE
Principal and Vice President, CPP

Ron, a Principal at CPP, has 35 years’ experience in dispersion modeling using numerical the physical modeling methods. He has presented/prepared comments on behalf of the A&WMA's air modeling committee at past EPA Modeling Conferences regarding revisions to the EPA "Guideline on Air Quality Modeling” and has developed new regulatory wind tunnel modeling applications (Equivalent Building Dimensions and HYWINMOD).  He has lead research projects for API, other industry groups and ASHRAE where new dispersion models and/or algorithms have been developed and tested. He has published over 100 technical papers on subjects related to atmospheric dispersion. He has a B.S in Mathematics, an M.S. in Meteorology (both from the SD School of Mines and Technology) and a Ph.D. in Fluid Mechanics and Wind Engineering from Colorado State University.

Sergio A. Guerra, PhD
Senior Environmental Engineer, CPP

Sergio is an Environmental Engineer with over 15 years of experience in Air Quality. At CPP Sergio leads the air permitting group assisting clients with regulatory and dispersion modeling needs. Sergio’s expertise in research, regulations, and consulting gives him a unique insight into the interaction of the theoretical and practical aspects of air quality.  This experience is at the core of his interest in advanced methods to achieve accurate results from regulatory tools such as AERMOD. His research has been published in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings. Sergio holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Kansas, where he performed statistical analyses of continuous emission data. He earned an M.S. in Environmental Engineering and B.S. in Civil Engineering from the same university.

Moderator

Jeff Reifschneider, Business Development, CPP

With CPP since 2004, Jeff is focused on business development for the firm’s various market sectors. He has conducted wind-tunnel and numerical modeling studies related to regulatory applications. At CPP, Jeff has consulted for Reliant Energy, Sempra and Chevron. Before joining CPP, Jeff collaborated with several organizations focused on improving pollution-related visibility throughout the United States through an extensive regional haze study with Washington University in St. Louis. Jeff obtained an MS in environmental science from the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering at the University of Kansas and a BS in biology from the University of Nebraska.  Jeff is a longtime member of the Air and Waste Management Association (AWMA).
